Bill Clinton was on the Daily Show with John Stewart on September 17th, and spent the first part of the interview talking about the Clinton Global Initiative. Nathanial posted a complete overview of the upcoming event on Change.org which can be viewed here.
The CGI press release detailing the event starts off:
President Bill Clinton will host the Fifth Annual Meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), an event that will bring together global leaders from business, government, academia, science, religion, and non-governmental organizations, including numerous heads of state, former heads of state, CEOs of multinational corporations, and prominent philanthropists. CGI is a forum for participants to develop and then implement workable solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
A lot of people have been talking about the celebrities and world leaders scheduled to appear, but I think something that should be noted is the number of business leaders participating in the various panels:
- Mike Duke, President and CEO, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.
- Muhtar Kent, President and CEO, The Coca-Cola Company
- Lloyd C. Blankfein, Chairman and CEO, The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc.
- Rex W. Tillerson, Chief Executive Officer, ExxonMobil Corporation
- Simona Rocchi, Senior Director, Sustainable Design, Philips
- John T. Chambers, Chairman and CEO, Cisco
- Carlos Ghosn, CEO, Nissan Motor; CEO and President, Renault
- Jeffrey Immelt, Chairman and CEO, General Electric
- James Rogers, Chairman, President, and CEO, Duke Energy Corporation
- Andrew N. Liveris, Chairman and CEO, The Dow Chemical Company
And of course, from the usual suspects of the social entrepreneurship world:
- Premal Shah, Kiva.org
- Bill Drayton, Ashoka
- Jacqueline Novogratz, Chief Executive Officer, Acumen Fund
- Waangari Maathai, Green Belt Movement and Nobel Laureate
- Muhammad Yunus, Grameen Bank
With an increased focus on the role of business in global development and the search for innovative and entrepreneurial solutions, this years CGI should prove to be quite interesting.
